Why Going Greek is So Important to Me

Going Greek has been one of the best decisions I have made during my college career. I can certainly attest to the fact that my college experience would be drastically different had I not joined the Delta Pi chapter of Alpha Chi Omega my freshman year. Being a member of a sorority is an experience that is hard to describe. It is one of those things that you have to be a part of to truly understand. It has been an important part of my life for many reasons since I started college. 

I struggled with adjusting to college my freshman year. I thought I wouldn’t have a problem being away from home, but I ended up being more homesick than I ever imagined. Alpha Chi Omega has provided a home away from home for me. Without Alpha Chi Omega, I would have most likely transferred back to my hometown. Alpha Chi Omega also gave me friends that I would have had a hard time making had I not joined a sorority. On Bid Day, I was given a group of girls that upheld the same values and beliefs as me and we all instantly connected. I can safely say that any one of my sisters would do anything for me, regardless of the situation. My best friends are in my pledge class and since we live together, I have the privilege to see them every day. Going greek has also led me to be involved in other campus activities and has prepared me for the real world after college. It has given me connections and relationships that will continue to grow long after I graduate. 

When people learn that I am in a sorority, they immediately associate me with the stereotypes that come with being greek. However, I am not the stereotype. I don’t go out very often and when I do, I don’t drink. I focus on my grades and school work because that is the main reason why I am in college. I strongly believe that the stereotypes associated with being in a sorority or fraternity are false for the most part. Many of the people I know in my chapter and other chapters on campus do not fit the stereotype that is implanted in the public’s mind. 

Going greek has definitely changed my college experience for the better and I think because I don’t fit the stereotype that my experience with greek life has been even better. I encourage incoming freshman to think about going greek because it truly is beneficial to college life. Going greek has taught me to be independent, but that I also have a group that I can depend on for anything. It has given me lifelong skills that I would not have attained had I not gone greek. Words cannot fully describe the importance my sorority holds in my life and I wouldn’t change that for anything.
