better-for-you homemade hamburger helper
1 lb extra lean ground beef
2.5 cups skim milk
1.5 cups hot water
2 cups dry whole meat macaroni (or pasta of choice)
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tbsp chili powder
2 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp Splenda
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
1.25 cups low-fat shredded cheddar cheese
- heat a large, sprayed skillet over medium-high heat. add the ground beef and brown until the meat is cooked through, breaking with a wooden or plastic spoon, and no longer pink.
- add the pasta, milk, water, cornstarch and spices. stir to combine and bring to a boil. once boiling, reduce heat to low and simmer. cover and cook for 12 minutes, or until the pasta is al dente.
- add in cheese and stir until cheese has melted and combined. serve immediately.
